Workplace

We can start looking how to make a good place where to build our models. The best is to make a workbench with an old desk better is with a grey or white surface (it makes contrast with the pieces of the models). You may also be near a window to have good ventilation (some putty or enamels are very stinking and also dangerous for inhalation) and a good light but not always all this is possible so you may do something similar. My modeling space is an corner of my room and near the window (as you can see in photos) and on the back of the chair I put a shelf with colors, parts of models, resin and all other is necessary for my works and readily at hand. If you didn't have daylight you should take a tube lamp (those for dental laboratory that are colored blue and don't change too much colors) not over 75W because you may hurt your eyes. On the Photo you should see I put a tube under the first shelf of my desk so I don't see it directly working on parts or painting.
Keep it always clean so you don't lose your pieces in the dirt.

My personal workplace If you couldn't have a desk you can take one wooden surface (60x50cm) with three sides of 10cm of height where you could put your works and go where you want to work. At the end you put it away somewhere protected with no problem with family or wifes. (Games Workshop sells something that goes well) Look this image to understand. Remeber that you shouldn't have to work curved as the Humpback of Notre Dame so have a good chair and one surface high enough for working erected with your back comfortably on the chair's back.

Another important thing is where you cut the pieces of models: it's good you didn't broke every time the blade point so you could buy one OLFA cutting matt (or similar) that preserves you blades because its surface is self healing so when you cut a piece of plasticard the point doesn't broke. The first times I was working on models I used some cheap pieces of carton of about 30x30cm , but every week I need to change and sometimes the blade passed through it and signed the desk surface. My actual OLFA cutting matt is near to 4 years old and it's still good for work and I think it's a must for working on plastic parts. Olfa cutting matt
