Tapes & Masking

Masking tape is a very important thing in model building and in all stages of contruction. It's better to find a good type so you don't destroy your works. I use a lot of different kinds of tapes and every one is good for some works and bad for others, take a try (on a junk model obviously) and remeber that you shouldn't leave masking tape or liquid too much time on model because the paint could strip off. Let us see what kind of masking material I use.

1) Bodyrepair masking tape: this is the most common tape you can find around in colour stores. You can find various sizes of tape and of softness. I use the little size for the borders of the area to mask and the bigger one for the large areas. Also the border of the tape is important because if the border isn't linear also your paint will go bad, with the borders not sleek. I also use it to help jointing plastic parts to hold them togheter. You have a lot of things to with this tape. It's a good idea to have one or two apart.

2) This is the Tamiya masking tape and it's the best one (on my opinion) I ever used for masking purposes. It's a little high on price but you should use it only for the fine works. You find it in various sizes 6mm, 10mm, 18mm. I used it a lot and I always have one or two as backup on my workdesk.

3) This isn't a real masking tape but you can use it to make small masking parts because it has a low adesivity and it's made of paper, in the normal life it's a post-it tape. As this kind of tape you can find a lot af things, you use every day, that can do well some job. The Yellow Post-it also can be used for some kind of repositionable mask.

4) FRISKET - This is a masking paper that is the best for making strange masking designs. It's made for Graphic-Artwork and you can find in GrapichShops. It's a low adesivity plastic foil and it's very thin, you can strech it very well around a lot of parts. You can make a desing on it and than cut the unnecessary parts with a sharp blade. It's a little expensive but is a must for who wants the best for masking. It's also repositionable.

Maskol - This a masking liquid that is very usefull for difficult to reach places or where you cannot use a normal masking tape. It's like rubber when set and you must peel it away at the end of your job. Remember to not leave it for more then 1 or 2 days because it may detach the paint under it. You can apply it with a toothpick or with an old pointed brush (you can wash it with thinner) and leave it set for about 30min. You can find also of other producers as Gunze Sangyo. I use it after a big masking with tape and I want to correct some areas or make a modification to the original design.
